What Is a Synopsis?

A synopsis is an essay written in prose that describes key elements of a longer work such as a book or play. The word comes from Ancient Greek abridgment from syn together optic appearance. In other words, it’s a short description of a longer piece that includes its most significant or critical points. It should be well written and give readers an understanding of what your work is about without spoiling important parts of it.

There are many reasons why you might want to write a synopsis. For example,

  • If you’re submitting something for publication you’ll probably need to submit a synopsis along with your work.
  • If you’re entering into contests or looking for funding to help produce your project, then again writing a good synopsis will go far towards helping you achieve these goals.

There are director’s writers and actors but often the person who writes the story’s synopsis doesn’t get much credit and that’s too bad because writing the synopsis is one of the most challenging parts of screenwriting.

6 Tips for Effectively Writing Novel Synopses

Follow these tips to produce a great book novel synopsis.

The Length

The length of synopsis is very important, if it’s too long and then you’re risking boring your reader and making them decide that they’ve already heard enough about your book. A good rule of thumb is to aim for at least a paragraph of description for every 25 pages in your manuscript.

Your synopsis should never contain spoilers! Save those details inside your query letter/cover letter and first chapter. Make sure that your writing style is similar to how you write in your novel. This will give readers an idea of what they can expect from reading your work. Be careful not to include any filler words or phrases such as buy or so. Use active voice when possible. For example, He went out into the street instead of The street was gone out by him. Avoid using adverbs like very, really, actually, etc.

A synopsis for an essay is different from one for a book/novel. When writing an essay there should be a summary of what you are saying. It should not include quotes or examples. The most important parts of an essay may be covered in your introduction but if it’s not then summarize them in your synopsis so that your reader understands why they need to read more.

Include some minor background information that is related to your main topic but does not make it lengthy and detailed, as you will expand on it later in your paper. Make sure that you include all crucial points you’ve made throughout your essay so far and work towards explaining how they are relevant to each other, especially with new evidence that has been introduced during analysis and evaluation.

Character Names

All characters must have names. A name is an excellent shorthand tool for describing characters. Referring to a character as the little old lady who lives down by Big Dan’s Fish Market doesn’t give002E

It can be fun if everyone in a story calls someone Leroy and he doesn’t know why until some secret is revealed late in his life but make sure your readers are getting all they need to know from each of your character’s names to keep them from getting confused or frustrated. Your job is to tell a story not confuse people with what may seem like silly inside jokes.

Character Thumbnails

Character storyboards will help you visualize characters. Try to put yourself in your character’s shoes and think about what your protagonist would want or do in each situation. For example, would she be a good communicator or a loner A fighter or a lover Does she make decisions quickly or weigh every option carefully.

All of these details will help you define your character’s personality traits and motivations. Visualizing these traits can also help you develop them through narration and dialogue which are essential elements of any good synopsis.

Extra Points

One common piece of advice for writers is to write about what you know. A book about angels will come across as trite if it comes from a human, so if your story has nonhuman characters demon’s monsters’ vampires anything outside of Homo sapiens. You’ll need to do some research. If you can’t find any published material on an alien species

you want to use in your story does Bigfoot have good qualities that fit into your plot hit up Google or YouTube and start watching videos and reading books on them. While each source won’t have everything you need for a fully fleshed out species and society add it all together and you should have plenty of fodder for creating believable aliens.

Third Person Presentation

Writing a synopsis for a novel can be hard, as there is a lot of information to compress into just a few pages. The trick is to keep your voice strong and make it seem as if you are narrating what’s happening in real-time. if you are telling someone what they need to know.

If that sounds tricky consider asking yourself these questions as you go along What is my character’s goal at all times What obstacles do, they face How does their internal conflict affect their external goals Is there an action scene here that might entertain readers who wouldn’t typically like your genre or subject matter

How to Write Synopsis for a Novel

When it comes to writing a synopsis for your novel you need to find a balance between too much detail and not enough. The synopsis is an outline of your story, including key events and characters. But if you include everything in there it will be too long and people won’t want to read through all of it.

If you don’t include enough details though then how will they know if they want to read more. If they’re not sure that they’ll like what’s inside, then why would they invest their time reading the whole thing. The answer is simple they won’t. That’s why you need to strike a balance between too much information and not enough by using keywords and scene descriptions instead of full sentences.

There are two big tricks in getting your synopsis right.

  • Trick The First

When readers are hooked they’ll want to know what happens next. A great way to tease them for more is to end with an action or event that leaves them hanging wanting more. Your readers will stay up all night reading. so they can find out how things turn out and maybe even suggest revisions of their own.

Don’t tell them what happens in chapter three-show. Make your first sentence a hooker like I had no idea my life was about to change forever

  • Trick The Second

Plotters meticulously outline every scene before they start writing and then stick to that structure through all drafts. Four drawer writers have one drawer for each of their characters an ideas drawer a plot drawer and an outline drawer. The most common method is somewhere between these two extremes you have an idea or character you’re excited about but you know there will be.

Some changes along the way so you do some brainstorming on paper but you don’t write out your scenes ahead of time. You may even write scenes more than once if something doesn’t work out quite right until everything comes together perfectly at which point you type up your final draft and don’t change anything or at least not much.

Common Mistakes

In a perfect world, every writer would start with a fantastic premise and then complete an incredible manuscript. But we don’t live in a perfect world and those writers do exist I have yet to meet one. For most people that is for 99% of writers, the process looks something like it starts off with a germ of an idea and our friends.

Saying we should write a book about it that leads to writing our first chapter outline synopsis some call it by different names at that point we either get excited enough to finish or realize that things need work. In other words, using your early drafts as synopses is a good way to lose your heart quickly.
