Do Americans work too hard? Does working more actually reduce productivity? Is a 40-hour workweek too much? Should there be a mandatory cap on the number of hours a person can work? Should there be changes in employment laws to give Americans more relaxation time?

America is regarded as the most overworked nation globally. If you want to understand the meaning of workaholics visit the US and see the significance. Approximately 70% of children in America live in homes where all the adults go to work as stated by the American Center of Progress on the issue of family and work-life balance. Does this mean that American Citizens are workaholics or is it a norm that has been developed over the ages?  Approximately 135 countries globally, have defined effective laws on the maximum number of working hours but the United States does not possess such criteria. The ILO states that American citizens work for more than 135 hours annually than Japanese, and in comparison to British, America works for more than 250 hours.

When the notion of productivity is stated we can view the positive outcomes of American workaholics. The productivity of workers in US has remarkably increased and as a result, data developed by BLS in USA states that since 1950 the workers productivity has increased by 400%. Having the notion that America has increased its productivity as result of increasing the number of working hours does it mean that working for approximately 40 hours in a week is ethical? Well, we can conclude that it is not a norm but Americans are outliers and distinguished as workaholics. What does this mean? Companies have become ruthless hence people need to keep their jobs and become the best performers and regarded as workaholics who love their jobs.

It is true that people love money and need more and when we think of money and happiness that is why citizens need to become workaholics and work more and get paid. Fighting for the rights of the workers is not a culture rather than wastage of time, why should we waste time on fighting over working rights when we can utilize that time in earning more.

This is some of the driving forces that equate to the notion of workaholics in America, but it is important to remember that a week vacation, fewer hours of working, working at home and taking unpaid leave is always the decision of an American Citizen. The citizens becoming workaholics is a choice; the government or the company managers are not responsible.

A mandatory cap on the number of hours a person can work should be included and changes in the employment laws to allow Americans more relaxation time is important hence reduce the notion of outliers and workaholics in the US.
