The two common forms of papers written using APA writing style, they are the literature review and experimental report. Each of these papers has its own distinct requirement regarding the sections that have to be included in the paper.

Literature review

The literature review of any subject is a critical summary of the past studies carried on that subject or topic. Usually, student work done in APA subjects fall under this group. Your lecturer might request you to complete this form of a paper to illustrate your understanding of certain work in the area you are interested in completing a study.

A literature review normally comprises of the following the underlined sections:

  • Title page
  • Introduction part
  • List of references

Some lecturer may as well request you to complete an abstract as part of the literature review. Therefore, always check with your lecturer on what he/she want. Also, find out on the length required and the number of sources needed.

N/B: A Literature review is not similar to the annotated bibliography. Supposing you are asked to complete an annotated bibliography, you need to review the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association the APA formatting style used for Annotated Bibliographies.

Experimental report

In most of the social sciences subjects, you will be requested to formulate and undertake your individual experimental research. If this happens, you need to complete a paper based on a structure that a bit complex compared to one used in the literature review.

The structure used in experimental report adheres to the scientific method; though it as well makes the paper you are writing easier to understanding by offering you familiar cues to assist your reader effectively scan your information for the following aspects:

  • Why the selected topic is relevant and important (explained in the introduction)
  • The problem being examined (also explained in the introduction)
  • How you are attempting to solve the problem (explained inthe methods section)
  • What you established (discussed in results section)
  • What your findings imply (expounded in the discussion section)

Therefore, an experimental report basically comprises of the following sections.

  • Title page
  • Abstract
  • Introduction
  • Method
  • Results/Findings
  • Discussion
  • References
  • Appendices(where necessary)
  • Tables and/or figures (where necessary)

However, always check the guidelines given for your assignment or those given to you by your editor before submitting your manuscript that contains the above-listed sections.

Similar to the literature review, there is no specific length for the experimental paper, and you need to find out from your lecturer.  However, in many cases, it is determined by the type and scope of the research being carried out.

 Other papers

Supposing you have to complete a paper that does not match with the above two categories, you need to adhere to the guidelines given on General format, ask instructions from your lecturer, or check out the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association for suggestions.

Before you submit a manuscript or a journal, ensure that you adhere to the guidelines contained in the submission policies of that specific publication. Also, include all the section you think are necessary for your paper. Remember to consider your audience when reaching this decision.

Supposing there is particular information that is specifically important for your research, you need to make sure that you have a section in a paper that sufficiently discusses that given information.
